Interview Courtesies. Where'd They Go?

Posted by Belgium58 on November 7, 2007 5:55 pm

Courtesy.  That fits this category.  It's something owed.  It seems harder to come by these days.

My current beef is with employers who don't call you back after an interview.  What's up with that?  Both parties have agreed to meet to discuss what they can do for each other......and are very respectful about it.  Then......where'd they go?   Okay, you are not giving me the job.  I don't have all the experience you want.  I'm not the cultural fit.  That's part of the routine, and I can accept that.  I've been the one making those decisions and there are many more considerations.   But one thing I've never forgotten is that being out of a job sucks.  It's scary, and extremely stressful.  Your life might really change.....and not always for the better.   It's bad enough that a salaried employee has less job security than a teenage busboy.  They at least get 3 written warnings.   We can get the boot for any reason at all, because of "right to work" laws.   Sorry, I'm digressing, and that's another issue.  Back on track.    I recall before the internet, that employers sent letters to thank you for applying with them. And you used to get a phone call if you interviewed.  That was the common courtesy.  Now,.... I understand that that's just not feasable these days with a few hundred people applying for nearly every job.  But to make a phone call or send an email to 4-6 people who actually interviewed, shouldn't be that hard.  But we're just left hanging.  This isn't just me.  I've heard this from several people.  One in particular really blows me away.  I mean this person went through 4 interviews for a big job, a vice presidents position with a major corporation.  That process took over 2 months, and then.........nothing.  It's as if they never existed.

It's just not right.  All levels of hiring managers need to have more courtesy for applicants.
